Music Theory

John Little, Instructor

Wednesdays - beginning/intermediate classes, 4:00-5:00 PM

Thursdays - advanced classes, 4:00-5:00 PM

Music theory gives student tools to understand what they play and hear, and helps musicians improve their performance approach. The beginning-intermediate music theory class will cover fundamental elements of music such as rhythm, aural skills, keys, intervals, and triads, an overview of and an introduction to compositional techniques used by the composers that are widely performed by orchestras. Guided listening will accompany each assignment and learning goal.

The advanced course will cover aural skills, both singing and hearing, analysis of vertical, and linear aspects of music, ornamentation, species counterpoint, and students will be given the tools to compose beginning pieces through a theoretical approach.

Any students are welcome to register.  You do not need to be a member of the LYO. With enough enrollment, we expect the fall course to begin in late Sept/early October.

Each course costs $150 and is being taught online for your convenience. To sign up, submit the Registration form on the right. You will be prompted to pay fees by credit card or PayPal. Checks will also be accepted. However, please wait to pay until you receive notification that the course has enough students registered for it to run.

If you would like to register more than one student, please provide the names of additional students in the Comments section.

Your entries in the form will be kept between sessions on the computer you are using until the form is submitted.
