Music theory gives the student the tools to understand what it is that they are playing, and hearing, and thus play it better and in a more rewarding way. The beginning-intermediate class will begin to solidify the elements of music, such as rhythm, aural skills, keys, intervals, and triads, an overview of and an introduction to compositional techniques used by the composers that are widely performed by orchestras. Guided listening will accompany each assignment, and learning goal.
The advanced course will cover aural skills, both singing and hearing, analysis of vertical, and linear aspects of music, ornamentation, species counterpoint, and students will be given the tools to compose beginning pieces in a systematic manner.
