REPERTORY ORCHESTRA  CONDUCTOR (part-time)

 

The Louisville Youth Orchestra is seeking a talented person to conduct LYO’s junior symphony orchestra. A successful candidate will demonstrate capacity to progress the ensemble toward professional standards. Repertory Orchestra is a training ground for students aspiring to join LYO’s flagship Symphony Orchestra. The position is under the direct supervision of the Music Director.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conducts Repertory Orchestra at rehearsals and performances.

• Education, training, and artistic development of the Repertory Orchestra.

• Prepares students for the professional demands of becoming an orchestral musician (etiquette, rehearsal preparation, principal chair leadership, etc.)

• Participates in conducting student auditions and aids in the process of student placement.

• Supports overall organizational health by promoting student retention and recruitment.

• Maintains excellent relations with community teachers, professionals, and arts stakeholders.

• Maintains healthy interpersonal and working relationships with students, families and LYO personnel.

• Chooses engaging and challenging repertoire that is appropriate and achievable, regularly reviewable by the Music Director.

• Responsible for all appropriate bowings and editorial marks (fingerings, lifts, shifting).

• Available for periodic meetings at the request of LYO senior leadership.

• Complete other reasonable duties which may be requested on an occasional basis.

 

Desired Qualifications/Skills:

• Bachelor’s Degree (minimum)

• Experience in educational setting.

• Strong strings pedagogy required.

• Conversant with woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians.

• Strong podium skills and presence.

• Approachable and likeable.

• Positive outcome on background check.

• Willing to work Sundays to accommodate LYO rehearsals and performances.
