The Louisville Youth Orchestra is offering beginning string classes for elementary students in grades 1 through 5 during the 2007-2008 school year. The pilot program begun in 1999 was a tremendous success having delivered string instruction to over 90 students in Oldham County. This year the LYO will offer a beginning class for 1st and 2nd graders (the Presto! Strings) and a beginning class for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders (the Allegro Strings). Instruction is offered on violin, viola and cello using a mixture of traditional teaching methods blended with principles of Suzuki style instruction. Active parent involvement in these classes is strongly encouraged.
Students involved in these classes will perform in concert during the school year and will participate in some activities of the nationally known Louisville Youth Orchestra.  In addition, students will be encouraged to participate in summer activities, area workshops and private lessons.
  • Schedule:
Both classes will take place at the Oldham County Arts Center on Tuesdays. The Presto! Strings will begin at 3:30 pm and the Allegro String at 4:30. Each class is one hour in length.
  • Instruction by professional conductors of the Louisville Youth Orchestra
  • Classes limited to 30 students
  • Cost for the entire school year is $300
  • No musical background is necessary
