Mission

The mission of the Louisville Youth Orchestra is to provide high quality musical experiences and the opportunity of performing for the benefit of the community and its young musicians regardless of race, creed or economic circumstances.
 
Membership
Eligibility. Membership in the LYO is open to young musicians from age 7 to 21. There are nearly 350 members from 15 counties and 60 schools.
Requirements. Members must participate in their school instrumental music programs and take private music lessons.
Costs. The annual membership fee is $315 for members of the Symphony Orchestra, Repertory Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Serenade Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble.  Membership is $300 for members of the Presto! and Allegro beginning strings. There are substantial discounts for families with more than one member. Scholarships for membership and private music lessons are available and awarded on the basis of need.
Auditions. All members must audition each year prior to placement. Entry is based solely on proficiency and not age.
Rehearsals. The Symphony and Repertory Orchestras rehearse at the Youth Performing Arts Center.  The Concert Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble rehearse at the St. Matthews Pavillion.  The Serenade Orchestra is based in Oldham County and rehearses at the Oldham County Arts Center.  (For days and times please see Schedule)
Programs. Each orchestra has numerous performances in a variety of locations each season. There are sometimes opportunities to work with guest artists and to perform new compositions. (Please see our schedule for specific dates and times.)

& Ensembles.		 Young musicians can find an orchestra to fit their individual needs and interests. Each orchestra and ensemble is led by its own highly qualified conductor.
Concert
Orchestra		 A string orchestra for intermediate musicians
Serenade
Orchestra		 A string orchestra based in Oldham County for beginning musicians.
Repertory
Orchestra		 A full orchestra for experienced musicians.
Symphony
Orchestra		 A full orchestra for the most advanced musicians.
Presto!
Strings		 A beginning string program for 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders.
Sonatina
Strings		 An orchestra class for string students with one year of traditional instruction or Suzuki students at the Book II level.

The LYO creates a musical education experience and discipline which nurtures a lifelong love and respect for the arts. Over 100 hours of rehearsal and instruction are provided each season in addition to performance opportunities.  Please contact the LYO office if you would like to sit in on a rehearsal.
