Season Overview

The First 50 Years: Rediscoveries…
Nov 9 / 3:00 / Brown Theater
The LYO is delighted to welcome two outstanding guest artists through the Kentucky Center and Gheens Great Expectations series to help us kick off our 50th anniversary celebration. 15-year old violinist Caroline Goulding and pianist Christopher O’Riley (host of NPR show “From the Top”) will be joining us to perform Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Piano in D minor. This concert will also look at new approaches to old music, as we “rediscover” the music of JS Bach and explore the close connection between Mendelssohn and Bach.

Tis The Season for Giving
Dec 14 / 3:00 / Brown Theatre
Come ring in the holiday season with the LYO! Our orchestras will put you in the holiday spirit with many traditional favorites. Take a break from your shopping and enjoy some great music!

An All-Tchaikovsky Celebration
Feb 4 / 6:30 / Whitney Hall
The LYO Symphony Orchestra will be teaming up with the Louisville Orchestra in their annual Side-by-Side concert at Whitney Hall. This year’s performance will be an extra special experience for our musicians as they work under the Louisville Orchestra’s music director, Jorge Mester, on a riveting program of music by the Russian master Tchaikovsky.

The Next 50 Years: Blinded by the Light…
Part 1: Mar 15 / 3:00 / Brown Theatre
Part 2: Mar 22 / 3:00 / Clifton Center

These two programs will feature all eight of our ensembles in two separate performances, celebrating the bright future of the LYO! Two of our orchestras will be carrying on the rich legacy of new music in Louisville when they premiere new compositions by Joseph Schwantner (through the League of American Orchestra’s “Made in America” program) and LYO alumnus Jason Thompson. LYO musicians will have a great opportunity to propel our culture into the new era of classical music and work with living composers!

And They’re Off!
Apr. 26 / 3:00 / Iroquois Amphitheater
Come enjoy the outdoor beauty of the Iroquois Amphitheatre as the LYO performs a variety of entertaining pops music for you in our annual end-of-the-season pops concert. For the second year in a row, this concert will be featured as a Kentucky Derby Festival event. We’ll also have a very special guest collaborating with us in the profound “Cell Phone Concerto” – you won’t want to miss it! This is also the concert where we say goodbye to our 50th anniversary seniors – and they’re off!
